The unlikely and complex story of the would-be king is told in the animated musical David. It takes viewers on a sweeping adventure, following him from an unknown shepherd boy to the next leader of God’s chosen people. From a confrontation with a well-known giant to a battle in a dark valley, this film is truly epic.
David is visually stunning. Some settings such as during the song “Tapestry” are intimate, beautiful, and filled with color, while others are expansive, unexpected, and full of action. The immense amount of thought and attention to detail is obvious right from the opening scene showing David as a shepherd boy to several complex action sequences. A sense of authenticity is conveyed through songs like “Shalom”, the occasional use of Hebrew words, and locations that feel as if they were drawing directly from old testament areas.. albeit stylized. These add a lot to the feeling that this is not just an American-ized version.
David is visually stunning.
Well-known Christian artist Phil Wickham is the perfect choice to play the lead role, and his energetic vocals suit David as an adult. The younger David is expertly portrayed by actor, singer, and dancer Brandon Engman. The film also features the talents of Brian Stivale and Miri Mesika and is directed by Phil Cunningham of Sunrise Animation Studios.
The musical moments in David are a delight. They are well-placed—never overwhelming or too frequent, as is often the case with films in this genre. Each song cleverly moves the story forward, adding depth and emotion to the characters. Brilliantly written and beautifully performed, they elevate the entire experience.
David is a must see for the entire family and will be released exclusively in theaters on December 19, 2025.
