Behind the Song: “Pick Up That Book” by Presence Music

There are so many voices competing for our attention right now. Every day, we are surrounded by opinions, noise, distractions, and promises of peace that never seem to fully satisfy. “Pick Up That Book” was written out of a desire to point people back to the one place where truth, hope, and transformation can actually be found: the Word of God.

When we wrote this song, we were thinking about the person who feels empty, even after trying everything. Maybe they have gone through the motions of faith. Maybe they have attended church, heard sermons, and tried to do the right things, but still feel unsure, unworthy, or disconnected from God. We wanted to write something that lovingly says, “Don’t just circle around the truth. Open it. Read it. Let God speak.”

The heart of the song is simple: pick up that book.

For us, that phrase is not just about reading the Bible out of obligation. It is about encountering the living God through Scripture. It is about letting His Word move from something we know about to something that is sealed in our hearts. The lyric, “There’s no author that is better than the Father,” really captures the message we wanted to share. God is not distant. He has spoken. He has given us His Word, and through it, He invites us into wisdom, conviction, healing, and relationship.

The words in red are especially meaningful in this song. When we sing, “The words in red will draw you in deeper,” we are pointing to the words of Jesus and the way His truth reaches places in us that nothing else can. His words do not just inform us; they transform us. They lead us out of shame, confusion, and striving, and into grace, mercy, and life.

Musically, we wanted “Pick Up That Book” to feel joyful and accessible. We leaned into a pop-country sound because we wanted the song to feel warm, energetic, and easy to sing along with. We love songs that carry deep truth but still make people want to move, smile, and lift their eyes again. Artists like CAIN, We The Kingdom, and Anne Wilson inspired some of that feel-good energy, but the message stayed rooted in what we believe people need most: Jesus and the truth of Scripture.

One of the most important parts of the song is the reminder that the Bible tells one big story: creation, fall, redemption, and restoration. That story is not just theological language. It is our story too. We were created by God, broken by sin, rescued by Jesus, and invited into restoration. If someone needs forgiveness, restoration, revival, or mercy, we believe the answer begins with turning back to God and His Word.

Psalm 119:105 says, “Your word is a lamp to my feet and a light to my path.” That verse is such a clear picture of what we hope this song encourages. God’s Word gives direction when life feels unclear. It brings light when everything feels dark. It reminds us who God is and who we are in Him.

Our prayer is that “Pick Up That Book” encourages listeners to rediscover the Bible not as a religious checklist, but as an invitation. An invitation to know Jesus more deeply. An invitation to let truth replace confusion. An invitation to find hope when life feels empty.

If this song gets someone to open Scripture again, even for the first time in a long time, then it has done what we hoped it would do.
