FOR RELEASE NOVEMBER 17, 2023 — Lacey Sturm has released her sophomore solo album Kenotic Metanoia, available everywhere November 17 at https://stem.ffm.to/kenoticmetanoia.
The former Flyleaf lead singer offers the project to the world independently, led by a string of arresting singles including “Awaken Love,” “Reconcile” and “Breathe With Me.”
The album’s enigmatic title is drawn from two Greek words: “kenosis,” referring to a state of emptying of self, and “metanoia,” referring to deep change and altering of course. Together, Lacey Sturm says that the title captures a moment when you start to see the truth about reality that you didn’t see before. “Kenotic metanoia” is the demand to address and respond to that truth, a call to leave one version of yourself behind.
“All these songs have been for my own heart,” Lacey has said. “When David sings the Psalms, a lot of the time he’s telling his soul what to do. That’s me too in this: telling my soul, singing what I know to be true.”
That truth ranges from the life-force found in “Breathe With Me” to the relinquishment of “Not Your Fight.” These songs are both intimately personal and appropriately mysterious, a glimpse into a deep spiritual process of surrender.
Contemplating the human experience, Lacey says, “Are we going to suffer? Do I need to fight against it, or do I stand and embrace whatever comes? Do I reject suffering and pain, or do I stand and walk through it so I can grow spiritually and see that there’s a strength I didn’t know was there?”
“My strength is made perfect in weakness,” the songstress continues, quoting the scripture. “You lay down your life and you become like Christ. He taught us what it’s like to be human: it’s to willingly lay your life down for love’s sake. It’s walking through that and learning compassion.”
The songs found on Kenotic Metanoia show the full range of both Lacey’s songwriting and vocals skills, fittingly for one of the most lauded voices in hard rock. Her distinctive scorching vocal tones combine with husband Josh Sturm’s broiling guitar riffs. The result is an album that promises to deliver on consistently heating fan hype.
The album also follows a successful summer of Flyleaf reunion dates, featuring Lacey at the band’s helm. With major appearances at festivals like Sick New World and Rockfest, Flyleaf proved that their fanbase is as moved as ever by their emotive hard rock.
Kenotic Metanoia is available on all major streaming platforms and through her online store at https://bio.to/laceysturm. For more information about Lacey, visit laceysturm.com.

The Beast of Revelation
The last book of the Bible is called The Revelation of Jesus Christ because it describes the culmination of sin, judgment, grace, and the revealing of the Lord in all His glory. Revelation, as it is commonly called, foretells the events of the final seven years of this age and introduces mankind to the age to come. Most of the book relates the judgments poured out upon an unbelieving generation and the grace by which God brings His people to Him through a time of great trial. The witness of Israel’s evangelists will bring in a large harvest of souls.
The first three chapters of the book of Revelation are direct letters to each of seven churches operating within Asia Minor (now the state of Turkey) at the time of John’s vision. Many believe these churches represent not only the Church throughout the centuries but also the categories of believers present in the world at the time of the fulfillment of the prophecies of Revelation.
Chapter 4 of Revelation opens with the sound of a trumpet calling John to “Come up here, and I will show you what will happen after these things.” This verse indicates that the previous chapters have been a progressive unfolding of a timeline and, at the very least, hint prophetically at the “snatching away” of the believer John from Earth to the heavenly places and the throne of God. As the four living creatures and the twenty-four elders worship, John sees God is holding a scroll sealed with seven seals. Only the Lamb who was slain is declared worthy to break the seals and open the scroll.
Thus begins the judgments of the Tribulation upon the earth.
The first seals introduce the Four Horsemen of the Apocalypse. The first of these horses is the white horse representing conquest and upon which rides a conqueror wearing a crown. This man is most likely the prince who arises out of the revived Roman Empire, the man known as the Anti-Christ.
Then after the sixty-two weeks, the Messiah will be cut off and have nothing, and the people of the prince who is to come will destroy the city and the sanctuary. And its end will come with a flood; even to the end there will be war; desolations are determined.
-Daniel 9:26
Daniel’s prophecy is crucial to unlocking the events of the last days. The “people of the prince who is to come” can only mean Rome. The Roman army led by Titus destroyed Jerusalem and the Temple in AD 70.
Who Is the Anti-Christ?
The Anti-Christ won’t be revealed until the restrainer, understood to be the Holy Spirit, is removed (2 Thessalonians 2:7). Since Christians in the age of grace are sealed with the Holy Spirit (Ephesians 1:13; 4:30; 2 Corinthians 1:21-22), He won’t be leaving Earth without them.
For those who read Revelation 13 preceding the Rapture, the Anti-Christ and his sidekick are introduced as “Beast.”
And the dragon stood on the sand of the seashore.
Then I saw a beast coming up out of the sea, having ten horns and seven heads, and on his horns were ten crowns, and on his heads were blasphemous names. And the beast that I saw was like a leopard, and his feet were like those of a bear, and his mouth like the mouth of a lion. And the dragon gave him his power and his throne, and great authority.
– Revelation 13:1-2
The second beast arises out of the earth and displays the external trappings of a messiah. Together, these two rule for seven years over the world systems. This seven-year period begins with the signing of a covenant between the Anti-Christ and Israel.
And he will confirm a covenant with the many for one week, but in the middle of the week he will put a stop to sacrifice and grain offering; and on the wing of abominations will come the one who makes desolate, until a complete destruction, one that is decreed, gushes forth on the one who makes desolate.
– Daniel 9:27
In the study of end times prophecy in the Bible, a prophetic “week” is seven years.
In the middle of the “week,” something happens to the Beast.
I saw one of his heads as if it had been fatally wounded, and his fatal wound was healed. And the whole earth was amazed and followed after the beast; they worshiped the dragon because he gave his authority to the beast; and they worshiped the beast, saying, “Who is like the beast, and who is able to wage war with him?” A mouth was given to him speaking arrogant words and blasphemies, and authority to act for forty-two months was given to him. And he opened his mouth in blasphemies against God, to blaspheme His name and His tabernacle, that is, those who dwell in heaven.
– Daniel 13:3-6
God’s introduction to the Beast in Revelation 13 describes him as having ten horns and seven heads. Each of the horns bore a crown. These horns and heads are interpreted as being kingdoms. The difficultly in knowing what is actually wounded in verse 3: a kingdom or a person?
It could very well be both. It’s possible that a kingdom is felled when the leader is wounded in a way that appears to be fatal.
Who is this leader? Revelation 17:8-11 explains that the Beast himself is the head of the revived Roman Empire. It is believed he could be the target of an assassination attempt that nearly fells his kingdom. Though the wound only appears (“as if”) fatal, Satan will make it appear as if the Anti-Christ has risen from the dead. Thus he will produce a demonic resurrection narrative to delude and amaze the world.

The Challenge
Now the Philistines gathered their armies for battle; and they were gathered at Socoh which belongs to Judah, and they camped between Socoh and Azekah, in Ephes-dammim. Saul and the men of Israel were gathered and camped in the valley of Elah, and drew up in battle array to encounter the Philistines. The Philistines stood on the mountain on one side while Israel stood on the mountain on the other side, with the valley between them.
1 Samuel 17:1-3
It comes like a monster in the night, smashing in the door of your existence with a crash. The unthinkable has invaded your life, choking the very air you breathe with the stench of sulfur. Evil’s shadow looms over everything you thought you knew and believed. There are no answers, no way forward, no taking down the enemy encamped before you. Resistance appears futile. Only the valley of decision separates you from destruction and slavery.
You can give in to the fear and run. Or you can ride down into the valley to the battle. The enemy won’t stay a respectful distance away. He’s on a mission to defeat you. You only have two choices:
Take the fight to him or be forever under his foot.
This was the dilemma facing the nation of Israel when the Philistine army arrayed against the nation. As the Israeli army advanced to the battle line, ready to fight, the Philistines sprung their trap. From their line a behemoth of a man stepped forward. Goliath stood at six feet, nine inches, clothed in bronze armor and well-armed. A shield-carrier walked before him.
He stood and shouted to the ranks of Israel and said to them, “Why do you come out to draw up in battle array? Am I not the Philistine and you servants of Saul? Choose a man for yourselves and let him come down to me. If he is able to fight with me and kill me, then we will become your servants; but if I prevail against him and kill him, then you shall become our servants and serve us.”
– 1 Samuel 17:8-9
Israel’s army melted in fear before the Philistine’s champion, yet not one blow had been thrown. The soldiers believed Goliath’s threats and knew no one in their army could defeat him. Not one of them considered asking God for help nor considered the spiritual importance of the battle before them.
For forty days, the enemy’s champion tormented God’s people with his taunts.
As the Father Commands
Then a young shepherd arrived from Bethlehem. The youngest son of Jesse the Ephraimite of Bethlehem, David had stayed behind to care for his father’s sheep while his three eldest brothers followed Saul into battle. One day Jesse told David to take provisions to the army and check on the welfare of his brothers.
Loaded with grain, bread, and cheese, David journeyed to the front. He arrived at the circle of the camp as the army was again going out to face the Philistines. David immediately joined the men at the battle line. There he heard the taunts of the Philistine and offered to take on the giant himself. Despite the misgivings of his brothers, David armed himself with his sling and five smooth stones from the nearby creek. It only took one well-placed shot to fell Goliath.
The shepherd boy delivered his people and destroyed the enemy because he knew the ways of war:
Obey your Father.
He who is faithful in a very little thing is faithful also in much.
– Luke 16:10
David was in the right place at the right time, not because he knew the future, but because he listened to his father and obeyed him. Had he refused Jesse’s order or procrastinated, he would have not been at the battle line, and Israel would have fallen into slavery. David’s faithfulness in what appeared to be a small request from his father positioned him to bring deliverance to his people.
Don’t drag your baggage into a battle.
Then David left his baggage in the care of the baggage keeper, and ran to the battle line….
– 1 Samuel 17:22
David did not hesitate to respond to the need. For victory, nothing should hold you back from responding to the call of God. Let the baggage of the past go and leave it behind.
Don’t let fear predict your future.
When all the men of Israel saw the man, they fled from him and were greatly afraid.
– 1 Samuel 17:24
David did not fear Goliath, because he knew God would not bless the enemy. He did not believe himself stronger than his brothers. He believed God to be stronger than their enemies. He understood the battle and what was at stake, putting himself in danger for the name of the God of Israel and those he loved.
Let your weapons be those of the Spirit.
The LORD does not deliver by sword or by spear; for the battle is the LORD’S and He will give you into our hands.
– 1 Samuel 17:47
David rejected the unfamiliar armor and weapons of those who didn’t trust God and instead chose the weapons by which God had delivered him in the fields as he guarded his father’s flock.
See the job through.
It wasn’t enough for David to strike Goliath down. He took a sword and beheaded him. Take care of any resentments or other attitude issues that might allow him back to challenge you in another valley. Jesus Himself crushed the head of the devil with His sacrifice and resurrection.
Then the LORD God said to the serpent,
“Because you have done this,
Cursed are you more than all the livestock,
And more than any animal of the field;
On your belly you shall go,
And dust you shall eat
All the days of your life;
And I will make enemies
Of you and the woman,
And of your offspring and her Descendant;
He shall bruise you on the head,
And you shall bruise Him on the heel.”
– Genesis 3:14-15
At some point in every life, Goliath will appear. We may not be allowed to choose the place of battle, but we know to Whom the victory belongs.

Terror Rift is a real place.
The earth bears witness to a past torture by outside forces from space. It faces significant danger from beneath, as well, from volcanic activity. Most of us are familiar with the newsworthy eruptions happening around the world. Fewer imagine the witches’ brew that simmers beneath Antarctica’s frigid exterior.
Mt. Erebus is a stratovolcano with the distinction of being the southernmost active volcano in the world. It was actively erupting when it was discovered January 27, 1841, by Sir James Clark Ross, the polar explorer for whom Ross Island is also named. Ross named this volcano and Mount Terror after his two ships. In Greek mythology, Erebus is a region of Hades, personified as the deity of darkness and the son of the Greek god Chaos.
Erebus sports a deceptively placid, snowy coat.
It is one of the world’s volcanoes classified as being in a state of continuous eruption. It has been active continuously since 1972.
At 12,448 feet, Mt. Erebus is the second highest mountain in Antarctica, after Mt. Sidley. It is considered one of the Volcanic Seven Second Summits, a listing of the second highest volcanic summits on each continent by elevation above sea level. Erebus shares Ross Island with three other volcanoes: Mt. Terror, Mt. Bird, and Mt. Terra Nova. It lies in Terror Rift, where the earth’s crust has been thinned by stretching.
Erebus features a 1,700-degree Fahrenheit boiling lava lake and is one of only five such lava lakes in the world. It never lies dormant; its lake is always bubbling; it’s always belching fumes, regularly spitting up explosive volcanic bombs from its crater.
Its slopes were first ascended to the summit crater rim in 1908 by members of Sir Ernest Shackleton’s group during the Nimrod Expedition.
No deaths have been reported on the volcano, but gas geochemist Werner Giggenbach burnt his socks when they were torched in a small explosion on Erebus.
The Mt. Erebus disaster of 1979
Erebus was the site of the tragic crash of an Air New Zealand DC-10 airliner taking tourists on a sightseeing tour on November 28, 1979. All 237 passengers and twenty crew members died in the crash. The famous explorer Sir Edmund Hillary just missed becoming one more tragic statistic. He had planned to be on the flight but decided to cancel.
Investigators into the crash concluded the pilots of the New Zealand airliner were briefed on a different flight plan than the one entered into the plane’s computer. They also flew the plane at a lower-than-recommended altitude to give the passengers a better view. They apparently became disoriented by a whiteout (“flat-light” phenomenon) and flew the plane directly into the ground.
Controversy engulfed the investigation of the disaster for years and finally resulted in the admission of culpability by the airline, not for the accident itself but for its actions afterward. It would be the last Antarctic excursion for that airline. Wreckage from the crash can still be observed during the austral season.
Danger lurking beneath the ice.
It took an undergraduate geology student at the University of Edinburgh in Scotland to bring the dangers lurking beneath Antarctica’s surface into sharper focus. Max Van Wyk de Vries, curious about what lay beneath the ice, began studying the data describing the geography below Antarctica.
He discovered many cones typical of volcanoes, ninety-one of them, in fact. Because their cones are intact, they are believed to be active. Inactive or dead volcanoes feature eroded cones. The cones of active volcanoes are constantly rebuilt.
Geologists at his school affirmed his findings. Some of the volcanoes are large, up to 3,280 feet high and at least a dozen miles across. His discovery of that many new volcanoes came as a surprise to the scientific community, since most research in Antarctica is conducted on the surface of the continent.

The Day a Space Rock Split the Sky
The sky was split apart like a scroll when it is rolled up, and every mountain and island were moved out of their places.
– Revelation 6:14
Twice in the last hundred years, Near-Earth Objects have shaken Russia. On June 30, 1908, a meteor estimated to be 150 to 260 feet wide exploded over Podkamennava Tunguska River in what is now Krasnoyarsk Krai, Russia. The blast equaled 5 to 10 megatons of trinitrotoluene (TNT) and leveled 830 square miles of trees, estimated to be about 80 million trees. It reportedly left hundreds of charred reindeer carcasses in its wake.
The largest impact of a space object with Earth in recently recorded history hit on June 30, 1908.
Eyewitness accounts of the event vary somewhat. But common threads connect the accounts. The object appeared in the morning and invaded a cloudless sky. It was described by witnesses as a bluish-white object that traversed the sky for several minutes, accompanied by a pillar of fire, turning the sky red. Many reported a shock wave so violent it knocked horses and people off their feet and shattered windows hundreds of kilometers away. Witnesses described a boom like thunder and what sounded like artillery or cannon fire.
The explosion registered at seismic stations and produced air waves felt as far away as Washington, DC. For several days, the night skies over Europe and Asia glowed.
The sky suddenly split in two…like an ancient scroll.
One man reported that as he sat outside, the sky suddenly split in two and fire appeared high over the forest. A hot wind rushed over the place, leaving marks on the ground. Then the sky shut, and a searing heat overcame him. There was a loud noise, and he was knocked briefly unconscious. The ground shook as sounds like cannon fire thundered around him. Later, he discovered windows shattered and an iron lock snapped.
A century later…
On February 15, 2013, an undetected meteoroid about sixty-six feet wide exploded, causing an airburst over Chelyabinsk, Russia. Though considered small, it contained an energy equivalent to nearly 500 kilotons of TNT, 20-30 times greater than that of the first atomic bomb.
Imagine the potential damage caused by a plurality of “stars” falling upon the earth, as is prophesied in Revelation 6. As we have seen in the last weeks, our world can change radically in a moment, whether the disaster is man-made or physical. We are only given this day to ensure our lives are right before God and we’ve said everything we need to say to our loved ones. This is the day to receive God’s grace and extend it to others.
In the light of eternity, nothing else matters.

…weep with those who weep.
– Romans 12:15
Today’s episode of Behind Blood Falls contains a personal message from the author.
A Nation Savaged
A small, white chair lies upended along an Israeli road among what was once the happy trappings of a planned picnic. Nearby, a car reamed with bullet holes sits deserted and soaked in blood. The family is gone, missing with hundreds of others in the wake of an early-morning attack upon Israel by the terrorist group Hamas.
The scope of the carnage upon the innocents unfolds in the following days. Video footage, broken survivors, and hollowed-eyed reporters document the brutality for the world to see.
The butchers of Gaza knew their opponent well.
Israel was caught flat-footed during the joyous celebration of Shemini Atzeret/Simchat Torah. Sukkot, or the Feast of Booths, had just ended. The two next festivals constituted a call for Israel to renew her connection with God and offer prayers for the rain of blessing and harvest, along with a joyous celebration of Torah. Israel marks these festivals with rest, dancing, singing, and praying for the Temple to be reestablished in Jerusalem. October 7, 2023, also happened to fall on Shabbat, or the Sabbath. Observant Jews had turned off their phones, effectively cutting off critical means to warn others of the assault.
Hamas entered by land, sea, and air in the early morning hours before dawn on October 7th. Their barbaric attack upon a peaceful citizenry stunned the world and sent shockwaves as far as the self-absorbed nation of the United States. We contemplate our open borders and hear the same butchers who chant Death to Israel! follow those words with Death to America!
Brothers in Pain
For days, we’ve been glued to the television at our house, consumed by alternating waves of grief, revulsion, and anger. The perspective is overwhelming. It’s very uncomfortable to sit in our comfortable homes and watch a nation we love suffer such loss. I’ve averted my eyes many times from the images of death. I couldn’t look upon such savagery and told myself it wasn’t necessary to see the pictures to empathize with the grief.
Then an Israeli acquaintance in Israel sent me photos. Some images were of the relief work being done there. Others were unfiltered photos of the brutal killing of Israelis. In that moment I realized he needed others to see what has been done to them. I needed to document with my own eyes the work of demons, to plumb the depths of the hatred poured out upon one people by another, to validate and share in the pain of our friends.
I can’t comprehend the trauma they have endured. But I know we are called to share in both their pain and their resolve. We can pray, send financial support, and let them know we stand with them against the forces of hell.
Know the times.
I have loved the Jewish people since my conversion to Jesus Christ in the seventies. We who are believers owe a great debt to the children of Jacob, for through Israel came our Deliverer. A Jewish carpenter wearing our crown of thorns shed His blood to ransom our souls from the evil one. We have been adopted into sonship through Jesus’ sacrifice and resurrection. The first church was comprised of Jewish believers. God has never abandoned His chosen people, and He never will.
In order to understand what is happening in the Middle East, it is vital to know God’s Word. The Lord tells us what to expect in the last days and at His coming. More than forty years ago, when I first studied Daniel and Revelation in the Bible, I couldn’t visualize the events prophesied in the Scriptures. Recently, I spent three and one-half years studying prophecy, current events, history, and science to write my Christian thriller Blood Falls. Often these studies brought me to a place of worship as the Spirit of God honored His promise in Revelation 1:3:
Blessed is the one who reads, and those who hear the words of the prophecy and keep the things which are written in it; for the time is near.
In these last days, God has thrown open the doors to understanding the times.
Today, we are seeing truly world-shaking and Biblical events unfold. Nothing that happens on the world stage or in our own lives is random. God is the blessed controller of all things. He will deliver Israel through a time of great tribulation. As for us, He has declared:
But when these things begin to take place, straighten up and lift up your heads, because your redemption is drawing near.
– Revelation 21:28
Thanks for allowing me to share my heart. Live each day like Jesus will return any moment. One day, He will.
– Pam Thorson

A fearsome thing is coming upon the Earth.
I looked when He broke the sixth seal, and there was a great earthquake; and the sun became black as sackcloth made of hair, and the whole moon became like blood; and the stars of the sky fell to the earth, as a fig tree casts its unripe figs when shaken by a great wind.
– Revelation 6:12-13
Bible scholars debate whether the disasters prophesied in the Revelation are natural or manmade. What are the of the “stars” that will fall from the sky during the seven years of tribulation coming upon the earth before the Second Return of Christ?
Are these “stars” nuclear bombs? Hypersonic missiles? Asteroids, meteors, or comets?
Perhaps man will bring disaster upon himself in the form of war or another manmade catastrophe. God often used nations as the instruments of His judgments in the past, and the last book of the Bible prophecies a time of God’s judgment coming upon an unbelieving world.
The enormity and apocalyptic nature of this time will exceed the tribulation of the days of Noah, when God executed a catastrophic and divine intervention upon that evil generation. Our planet bears witness to this world-wide cataclysm, and secular scientists are increasingly acknowledging this fact. The moon is battered with visible craters, and 9,137 of these have been recognized by the International Astronomical Union. Researchers have discovered over 100 rings of impact craters on Earth, bearing witness to its own tortured past.
Space constantly bombards our planet.
Space debris constantly bombards Earth, most of it burns up in the atmosphere upon entry. Scientists have found evidence of wounds caused by larger objects. The planets and other bodies of our solar system bear the scars of many collisions with space objects.
Smaller space bodies orbiting around the Sun at a distance between 0.983 and 1.3 astronomical units are designated Near-Earth Objects (NEOs). Comets, asteroids, and meteoroids are NEOs.
An NEO with an orbit potentially in Earth’s path and large enough to cause significant destruction is called a PHO (Potentially Hazardous Object). Most of these are PHAs, or Potentially Hazardous Asteroids.
We are granted precious few insights into what an assault from outer space upon Earth might look like. So, what is the difference between an asteroid, meteor, and comet? Aren’t they just different names for the same thing?
Know your Potentially Hazardous Objects
There is a difference in terminology when we talk about NEOs. This difference applies mostly in reference to their size and interaction with Earth and the Sun.
Asteroid: A rock, smaller than a planet but larger than a meteoroid, circling the sun
Comet: A body made of ice and dust that circles the sun. As the ice and dust vaporize, the comet forms a “tail.”
Meteoroid: A space rock, usually a piece of an asteroid or comet
Meteor: A meteoroid that enters a planet’s atmosphere and burns up. Large meteor showers detectable from Earth occur when our atmosphere passes through the particles left behind by a comet.
Meteorite: A meteoroid that hits the ground
Better yet, know your Savior.
Learning about the prophecies of the Bible and the science of their potential means of fulfillment is interesting, but it only brings us closer to deliverance if we listen to the warning. Remember the words in the introduction to Revelation:
Blessed is the one who reads, and those who hear the words of the prophecy and keep the things which are written in it; for the time is near.
– Revelation 1:3
If the time of the fulfillment of Biblical prophecy concerning the Second Return of Jesus Christ was near 2,000 years ago, it must be a breath away today. A blessing is granted to those who read the prophecy with open hearts and respond to it by accepting the message it contains. It’s not enough to read Revelation. It’s not enough to study it. We are called to respond to it, to bow to the Sovereign soon to be revealed to all mankind before the day of judgment falls.
Those who receive Jesus as Lord will not see the day of wrath coming upon the earth. If we love humanity, we must warn those in the path of danger. If we love as Jesus loves, we will show them the way of life.

A secret is a terrible thing to bear.
Would not God find this out? For He knows the secrets of the heart.
– Psalm 44:21There are myriad types of secrets. Some are trifles, only important to us. Others are life-shattering and may even have legal implications. If it’s a good secret, it’s hard to bear because we’re bursting to share it with others. Good news only gets better when it’s celebrated with a loved one or friend, right? Keeping it quiet is misery.
A dark secret can’t be shared, so there’s nobody to help relieve the guilt; no one with whom to share the crushing pain. There’s no heavier burden than carrying heartache alone. Sometimes the secret we carry is not for ourselves but for others.
Those are the worst.
We all have secrets of some magnitude. One researcher found 97% of people are keeping a secret at any given time. Most people carry an average of thirteen. We know how exhausting it is to live with the worry of having a part of us or someone we love exposed to others, of remaining silent when we want to speak.
Psychologists have known for some time about the effect that hiding secrets has on our emotional and physical well-being. Secrets are hard on both body and soul. Recent research has illuminated the emotional crisis further, finding that it’s not the work of keeping the secret as much as the living with the secret that ravages us.
As Michael Slepian writes in the Scientific American, confiding in a third party reduces emotional pain—not by lessening the need to keep the secret from others, but by reducing the amount of time spent wandering to that place in the mind and reliving it.
But sharing a secret with another is fraught with danger. It takes great wisdom to know when our peace of mind is worth the possible destruction of another’s life. It’s possible to lose a friendship or destroy entire relationships with an ill-timed revelation. Relieving our minds at the expense of another’s well-being is both unhealthy and narcissistic.
There is better way.
God already knows our darkest secrets.
“Can a man hide himself in hiding places
So I do not see him?” declares the LORD.
“Do I not fill the heavens and the earth?” declares the LORD.
– Jeremiah 23:24You have placed our iniquities before You,
Our secret sins in the light of Your presence.
– Psalm 90:8He who conceals his transgressions will not prosper,
But he who confesses and forsakes them will find compassion.
– Proverbs 28:13But there is nothing covered up that will not be revealed, and hidden that will not be known.
– Luke 12:2God already knows everything about us. We have no chance of impressing Him with outward appearances. We can’t keep our secrets behind closed doors, because no door can stay shut to His eyes.
He knows the secrets that are killing us, and they’ve never stopped Him from loving us. If the secret is a sin, it already killed Him. That’s why He came to Earth. He came to ransom us from the sins holding us hostage and keeping us from receiving the gift of life. The price we owed for sin was death. Christ paid that great cost for us. No secret is too dirty for God. Christ already bled to pay the judgment and free us from those spiritual chains.
For God did not send the Son into the world to judge the world, but that the world might be saved through Him.
– John 3:17Why dwell in darkness when the light is so near?
Freedom is as close as the floor. Or a chair, or a park bench. Wherever we are, we can open the door and ask the Spirit of God to cleanse the rooms of our hearts. When we talk to Him and tell Him what hurts, confessing our sins and our secrets, He will make us new.
According to the greatness of Your compassion blot out my transgressions.
Wash me thoroughly from my iniquity
And cleanse me from my sin.
For I know my transgressions,
And my sin is ever before me.
Against You, You only, I have sinned
And done what is evil in Your sight.
– Psalm 51:1-4Intrigued? Do you yearn to climb from the pit of the Accuser into freedom?
God’s Word gives us everything we need to understand what sin does to our lives and how the sacrifice of Jesus Christ can redeem us. The book of John in the New Testament is a good place to start. Find a ministry, church, or another believer we trust to help us begin our new lives in the light.
We’re not meant to take this journey alone.

What is the big deal about a red heifer? Isn’t it just a cow?
A heifer is a young, female bovine that has not yet given birth. After a heifer has had a calf, she is called a cow. A heifer born completely red, without so much as two hairs of a different color, is exceedingly rare. Even more rare is a red heifer who remains red as she grows.
Jewish law, or Halakah, declares all Jews impure due to their direct or indirect contact with death. Today, many rabbis prohibit their followers from going to the Temple Mount even to pray, because they are considered ritually impure. The Torah commands those who attend Temple service and offer sacrifices be ritually pure, since the destruction of the second Temple in AD 70.
According to the Mishnah Parah, the ritual of the red heifer, whose ashes are used to symbolically purify a person, has only been performed nine times in history:
- Moshe (Moses) performed the first ritual as outlined in Numbers 19.
- Ezra the Scribe, an important Jewish scribe and first high priest of the Second Temple period. He is believed to have penned the Old Testament books of Ezra, Nehemiah, Chronicles, and Malachi.
- Shimon (Simeon) the Righteous (Simeon the Just), a Jewish high priest of the Second Temple period. He is known for rebuilding the walls of Jerusalem and repairing the Temple, among other projects. He met with Alexander the Great but refused his demand to have his statue erected in the Temple.
- Shimon (Simeon) the Just
- Yochanan (Johanan) the High Priest, a first century high priest assassinated in AD 58 by the Roman procurator Felix.
- Yochanan the High Priest
- El’yhoeini ben Hakof (Elioenai ben HaQayaph)
- Chanamel HaMitzri (Hannameel) (Ananelus) the Egyptian, a first century high priest appointed by Herod to the office. Josephus identifies him as Babylonian.
- Yishmael ben Pi’avi (Ishmael ben Fabus (ben Phiabi), a first-century high priest appointed by the Roman governor, Valerius Gratus. His time in office coincided with the life of Jesus Christ, but he is not mentioned in the New Testament.
Then the Lord spoke to Moses and Aaron, saying, “This is the statute of the law which the Lord has commanded, saying, ‘Speak to the sons of Israel that they bring you an unblemished red heifer in which there is no defect and on which a yoke has never been mounted. And you shall give it to Eleazar the priest, and it shall be brought outside the camp and be slaughtered in his presence. And Eleazar the priest shall take some of its blood with his finger and sprinkle some of its blood toward the front of the tent of meeting seven times. Then the heifer shall be burned in his sight; its hide, its flesh, and its blood, with its refuse, shall be burned.’”
– Numbers 19:1-5
It was long believed Temple service couldn’t be restored until the ashes of the red heifer last sacrificed were found. Today, a growing movement has opted to produce a new red heifer and use her ashes to purify Jews for Temple service. A vibrant and expensive program to create a new line of ritually pure red heifers has been established and has produced five red heifers raised under strict guidelines and found to be without spot or blemish.
These heifers arrived from the United States to Israel with great fanfare in 2022 and have been cared for on a farm at Beit Shean. The oldest is just months away from being of the age for preparation.
In July of 2023, a special contingent of Israelis met at the site of the ancient tabernacle in Shiloh for the Binyamin Temple Conference. There, they welcomed the arrival of the first of the five red heifers from the United States that will be housed at Ancient Shiloh heritage site.
The Red Heifer Center will continue to development the program devoted to producing the first ashes for purification in over two millennia. The event was organized by the Binyamin Regional Council in association with the Temple Institute and featured a banquet spotlighting ancient and Temple era foods.
Why Is It Important?
The influential Jewish astronomer, philosopher, and physician Moses ben Maimon lived from 1138-1204. He is often known as Maimonides. His Mishneh Torah is considered an authoritative work of Jewish law. This theologian and man of science is quoted as having made an amazing prediction about the coming of the Moshaich:
“…and the tenth red heifer will be accomplished by the king, the Messiah; may he be revealed speedily, Amen, May it be God’s will.”
The emergence of the red heifers in light of this ancient proclamation is not lost on traditional Judaism. The Temple Institute has been doggedly researching and collecting the materials for a third temple. A new generation of Levite priests is being prepared. The blueprints for the Temple have been drafted. A remnant in Israel awaits its king.
None of this changes the fact that their king is Jesus Christ. It will take seven heartbreaking years for the nation of Israel to realize their mistake.
A Bible prophecy teacher once quipped that when you see the Halloween decorations in the stores, you know Christmas is coming.
For the believer who loves Israel, the preliminary events leading up to the Tribulation are a reminder that if Israel is ready to crown a false messiah, the real one is at hand.
