I’ve been a long-time fan of Rebecca St. James’ music. It all started with her first album. When I was young, I didn’t own many albums. My siblings had Rebecca’s early albums to listen to, and that’s where I discovered her. I remember loving her songs with God-focused lyrics. She inspired me! And when I first met her was at a concert. I went with my oldest brother. After my concert with Rebecca St. James, I remember meeting her where she signed my album. It was Waiting For Me – which released in 2000. So many years ago!
It wouldn’t be my last meeting with Rebecca St. James. Many years later, I got to do a phone interview with her for the Christian music website, CMADDICT. I was an assistant editor then. My brother, Kevin, was, and still is the owner and senior editor. At the time of the phone interview, I was incredibly nervous. But it went well. Once I stopped the recorder for the phone interview, I went through and wrote it up for CMADDICT. I was elated that I got to meet Rebecca again. She’s such a kind, considerate, and inspiring singer.
I met Rebecca once again, and it was at a pro-life event. I got my photo taken with her and a book autographed. We even had time to hang out with her. It was all so memorable. And, I want to say that I have read most of her books. She wrote a lot of books about waiting for the right guy, since she, herself, was waiting for someone. When I was reading them, I was greatly encouraged by her writing. Fast forward some years, and I discovered that she did find someone and got married. I was so happy for her! I was even more excited when she recently wrote a book with her husband Cubbie Fink. I had to get it!
Lasting Ever is a wonderful book written by both Rebecca St. James and Cubbie Fink. It takes on their journey from Rebecca St. James’ music career to Cubbie Fink’s path that connected with hers. It was cool to see how their path intersected – how God brought them together. They both shared their struggles, their faith, and the growth of their family. They were open and inviting as they talked about everything that was important to them. And I really loved being able to see that glimpse into their lives. Especially, in how God put everything together into one cohesive piece as a family. One that brings God glory.
It’s been a long journey over the years, and I’m so thankful for the musicians that have come along on the ride with us. Rebecca St. James is one of those people. I greatly admire her, and I always enjoy her music and books. Overall, I recommend this book for fans of Rebecca St. James’ music, and for anyone that grew up during that time when Christian music was becoming popular. So, yeah, I’m looking forward to any new music or books they may write. I’m sure they’ll be just as good, or not better than Lasting Ever.

I was excited to find out that TobyMac had a new album out. It’s a full-length album called Heaven On My Mind. The first song on the album is the title track. It starts out with a style that’s reminiscent of TobyMac’s other music. His music is upbeat, fun, and light, but with strong messages. The first song has lyrics with, “I got heaven on my mind, I’ve got people waiting by.” I couldn’t agree more! I’ve got heaven on my mind, too, so the lyrics are super catchy! I find myself singing along to this song in the car, since I got a cool, real-life CD.
The second song that struck me was, “God Did It” with the lyrics, “There’s no way around, some things that can’t be explained away.” It reminds me of the miracles that God has done in people’s lives. God did it. Not the world, not us, but God did it. It’s encouraging as we all know that God is a miracle worker. We continue to hope and pray for Him to work in our lives, and also in the world. He truly is a God of creating miracles and inspiring faith in us.
In the sixth track, there’s, “Resist (Keep The Devil Away.” I’ve found myself belting out the lyrics in the car with, “Give me the feet to walk on water, keep me from the deep.” When life gets tough, and you’re going through temptation, this is a great song to sing! I love it so much, and it’s on constant repeat in my car. Definitely one awesome song!
And then there’s “Can’t Stop Me.” This track alone has become one of my favorite songs of anything. I’ve listened to it constantly. I’ve even watched the music video many times – which you’ve got to see! The song itself took a darker, but amazing turn in his album as the eighth song. Some of the lyrics are, “The devils I’ve been seein’, the lies that they’ve been preachin’, can’t stop me from believin’.” I can’t say enough how amazing this song is. So, even if you don’t get the whole album, get this song. You won’t regret it!
The rest of the songs are all good, but these four stood out the most. And I don’t really know where to rate this album with his others, because I feel like they all deserve a certain place. It’s definitely a good project, and one that I would recommend. Especially, of course, if you like TobyMac, then this would be a nice addition to your collection. Check it out!
