  • Jesus wept.

When Jesus arrived in Bethany, His followers were mourning the death of Lazarus. He sent Martha to find Mary. Martha found Mary in despair, surrounded by mourners who were attempting to console her. At the sight of Jesus, she fell to His feet in abject grief.

…saying to Him, “Lord, if You had been here, my brother would not have died.” When Jesus therefore saw her weeping, and the Jews who came with her also weeping, He was deeply moved in spirit and was troubled, and said, “Where have you laid him?” They said to Him, “Lord, come and see.” Jesus wept. So the Jews were saying, “See how He loved Him!” But some said, “Could not this man, who opened the eyes of the blind man, have kept this man also from dying?” So Jesus, again being deeply moved within, came to the tomb.”

    – John 11:32-38

The original language of this passage suggests Jesus was filled with both intense sorrow and indignation at the scene. The hopelessness  of His followers and the open questioning of His power filled the Master as He stood before the tomb of Lazarus.

Jesus said, “Remove the stone.” Martha, the sister of the deceased, said to Him, “Lord, by this time there will be a stench, for he has been dead four days.”

    – John 11:39

Not just a stench. The rotting body of a beloved brother. Martha and Mary must have reacted in horror.

Jesus said to her, “Did I not say to you that if you believe, you will see the glory of God?” So they removed the stone.

    – John 11:40-41

The putrid odor of death and spices escaped from the tomb’s dark belly and assaulted the mourners.

    Just as they expected.

Then Jesus raised His eyes, and said, “Father, I thank You that You have heard Me. I knew that You always hear Me; but because of the people standing around I said it, so that they may believe that You sent Me.” When He had said these things, He cried out with a loud voice, “Lazarus, come forth.” The man who had died came forth, bound hand and foot with wrappings, and his face was wrapped around with a cloth. Jesus said to them, “Unbind him, and let him go.”

    – John 11: 40-44

    WHAT?

This was no mere resuscitation. No one could claim Lazarus had simply emerged from an unconscious state. This was the restoration of a man’s decomposing body to complete health. Many that day witnessed Lazarus emerge from the tomb, still wrapped in the grave clothes stained from petrification. John does not record the amazement and joy and wonder that surely electrified Martha, Mary, and their friends, except to record that they broadcast the news around the region.

So the people, who were with Him when He called Lazarus out of the tomb and raised him from the dead, continued to testify about Him.

    – John 12:17

Many believed, so many in fact that the Pharisees complained.

“…the world has gone after Him.”

    – John 12:19

Was the reaction of the religious leaders to the miracle one of joy and worship of their Messiah?  On the contrary, they convened a council and plotted the murders of both Jesus and Lazarus.

So from that day on they planned together to kill Him…But the chief priests planned to put Lazarus to death also; because on account of him many of the Jews were going away and were believing in Jesus.

    – John 11:53; 12:10-11

The Biblical record is silent on how Lazarus eventually died. We know, of course, Jesus went on to suffer death on a cross; not because the religious leaders trapped Him, but because He had come to Earth to pay this ransom for our lives. Before His death, Jesus visited Bethany one more time to see His friends Lazarus, Martha, and Mary. As they reclined together for supper, Mary did an amazing thing.

Mary then took a pound of very costly perfume of pure nard, and anointed the feet of Jesus and wiped His feet with her hair; and the house was filled with the fragrance of the perfume.

    – John 12:3

Nard was an expensive and fragrant perfume extracted from a plant from India. Judah Iscariot complained about the apparent waste of such an expensive perfume, but Jesus said,

“Let her alone, so that she may keep it for the day of My burial.”

    –  John 12:7

Was the anointing simply Mary’s act of devotion to her Lord?

Had she been directed by the Holy Spirit in a prophetic act speaking of His soon crucifixion? Or had she been paying attention when Christ had told the disciples of His impending death?

Perhaps all three. One thing is for sure. She would never see death as a permanent end, having witnessed the power of the Author of Life.

  • When the worst happens to us, where is Jesus?

When Lazarus became deathly ill, his sisters entreated the Lord for help. Not only did He not run to their side, He purposely stayed away for two days.

While they prayed and waited and anxiously attended to their brother, Jesus refused to come and heal him.

They were witnesses of His power. They knew He could heal Lazarus. His absence could only mean He had chosen not to come. His reply to the messenger that the sickness would not end in death made no sense as they watched Lazarus grow sicker and die.

Finally, the Lord told His disciples He would return to Judea.

Our friend Lazarus has fallen asleep; but I go, so that I may awaken him out of sleep…Lazarus is dead, and I am glad for your sakes that I was not there, so that you may believe; but let us go to him.

    – John 11:11, 14

When Jesus and His disciples arrived in Bethany, Lazarus had already been dead and in the tomb for four days. Although stage one of decomposition begins four minutes after death (a process called autolysis), it is during stage two (three to five days later) an unembalmed body begins to bloat and putrefy.

    If Only…

When Martha got word that Jesus was coming, she went to meet him. But Mary stayed in the house. Martha said to Jesus, “Lord, if only you had been here, my brother would not have died. But even now I know that God will give you whatever you ask.”

    – John 11:20-22 NLT

At the news of Jesus’ arrival in Bethany, the sisters had drastically opposite reactions. Mary, the one who loved to sit at her Master’s feet and hear Him teach, didn’t even leave the house to greet Him. Was her grief too overwhelming, or was she struggling with resentment at the Lord’s apparent lack of compassion toward them?

Martha immediately went to meet Him. Her first words were a tumble of confusion and faith. Was there a touch of reproach in Martha’s voice? If only You would have come when we sent for You.

There they are, two of the saddest words spoken from a broken heart, words drenched in regret and yearning.

If only He had rescued us from hardship and loss. If only we didn’t have to learn the lessons of suffering.

Martha assured Him she didn’t doubt His ability to talk to God on their behalf, leaving the doubt of His compassion hanging unspoken between them. How little she understood about her Master and His plans for His beloved friends!

Jesus said to her, “Your brother will rise again.”

    – John 11:23

Yes, she knew that. But she still didn’t get it.

    The Great “I AM”

Martha said to Him, “I know that he will rise again in the resurrection on the last day.”

    – John 11:24

Jesus said to her, “I am the resurrection and the life; he who believes In Me will live even if he dies, and everyone who lives and believes in Me will never die. Do you believe this?” She said to Him, “Yes, Lord, I have believed that You are the Christ, the Son of God, even He who comes into the world.”

    – John 11:25-27

The book of John records seven great “I AM” statements of Jesus directly identifying Him with the “I AM” of Exodus 3:14:

And God said to Moses, “I AM WHO I AM”; and He said, “This is what you shall say to the sons of Israel: ‘I AM has sent me to you.’”

In Hebrew, the term “I AM” is a declaration of a perpetual state of being.*

This declaration, the fifth in the series of such in John’s account, reveals Jesus’ motive in allowing Lazarus to die. Martha believed Jesus to be a great prophet who had the ear of God. She did not realize with whom she spoke. Before her stood the very God of Moses; the Word and second Person of the Trinity; the great I AM in the flesh. The death of Lazarus set the stage for God’s demonstration of the eternality of life, Jesus’ authority over all creation, and His identification with the everlasting, all-powerful Triune God.

God’s way is always perfect. His answer to every desperate cry is always the perfect one.

After this exchange, Jesus called for Mary. As Martha went to find her sister, a rush of emotions must have flooded her. Why had he questioned her faith? What was he about to do?

  • Who was Lazarus?

Now a certain man was sick, Lazarus of Bethany, the village of Mary and her sister Martha.

    -John 11:1

The New Testament introduces us to two men named Lazarus. One is a poor man described in a parable of Jesus in Luke 16:19-31.

The other Lazarus was the brother of Martha and Mary and one of the disciples of Jesus living at Bethany. John MacArthur places this Bethany as about two miles from Jerusalem on the east side of the Mount of Olives along the road to Jericho. The account of Lazarus is documented in John 11:1-12:17.

This Lazarus became the recipient of one of Jesus’ most dramatic miracles as the Christ approached the day of His arrest and crucifixion. His story is documented in John 11:1-12:17, an event electrifying those who witnessed it and making him an enemy of the religious leaders by simply being alive.

So the sisters sent word to Him, saying, “Lord, behold, he whom You love is sick.” But when Jesus heard this, He said, “This sickness is not to end in death, but for the glory of God, so that the Son of God may be glorified by it.”

    -John 11:3-4

    The Desperate Hours

As often happens in our lives, the Word of God comes to us in our desperate hours, and it appears to contradict the reality with which we’re confronted.

Now Jesus loved Martha and her sister and Lazarus. So when He heard that he was sick, He then stayed two days longer in the place where He was.

    -John 11:5-6

What an awful two days Martha and Mary must have endured while they awaited their Master! What agony they must have suffered, fearing the worst, driven by the desperation of the moment. Their brother was sick, perhaps dying, and the one who could save him seemed in no rush to do so.

    The contradiction is startling:

    Jesus loved them.

    So He did nothing.

His very inaction seemed to scream a shocking indifference. Yet those of us on the other side of history understand the Lord had a greater deliverance planned than merely healing Lazarus. This plan would take time and all the trust Mary and Martha could muster.

  • God’s Full Wrath

Then the kings of the earth and the great men and the commanders and the rich and the strong and every slave and free man hid themselves in the caves and among the rocks of the mountains; and they said to the mountains and to the rocks, “Fall on us and hide us from the presence of Him who sits on the throne, and from the wrath of the Lamb; for the great day of their wrath has come, and who is able to stand?”

    – Revelation 6:15-17

    The Sixth Seal

The first five seals of the tribulation have been precursors to the full release of God’s wrath upon Earth. When the sixth seal of God’s judgment is opened in heaven, the world’s population enters a time of terror even worse than the worldwide obliteration of creation in Noah’s flood.

Some will even recognize the source of this judgment. Revelation assures us there will be a great harvest of humanity for Christ during this time as the veil between earth and eternity is rent. At the opening of the fifth seal, we are given a glimpse into the altar in heaven. Here the souls of those martyred during the tribulation are comforted. Since Christ has promised His Bride will not experience the time of God’s wrath, these can only be those who have come to Christ after the rapture of the church and who must be carried through this time, as was Noah and his family.

These “elect” from the tribulation are again identified in Revelation 7.

After these things I looked, and behold, a great multitude which no one could count, from every nation and all tribes and peoples and tongues, standing before the throne and before the Lamb, clothed in white robes, and palm branches were in their hands; and they cry out with a loud voice, saying, “Salvation to our God who sits on the throne, and to the Lamb.”

    – Revelation 7:9-10

    Who is this multitude?

These are the ones who come out of the great tribulation, and they have washed their robes and made them white in the blood of the Lamb.

    – Revelation 7:14

    Running for Cover

An assault on Earth from space, possibly from either asteroids or a comet, will be terrifying, especially with the resulting earthquakes from widening fissures and shifting land masses as the crust fractures. Imagine feeling the only safe place is below ground. Scripture makes it clear both rich and poor, slave and free, will be running for cover. Some—the military, preppers, and the rich—will have bunkers already prepared.

World War II bunker in Switzerland

    Switzerland is riddled with bunkers.

A country committed to political neutrality on the world stage, Switzerland has dedicated its efforts instead to its national survival. Switzerland hosts a slew of bunkers; thousands of military bunkers lie beneath its surface and dug into its mountains. Some are camouflaged as homes or cabins.

Nearly 310,000 public and private bunkers and fallout shelters exist as well, enough to shelter all its citizenry in time of war. Most of these were built out of fear generated by the Cuban Missile Crisis of 1962. In 1963, the first regulations were passed requiring fallout shelters for citizens.

Today, Swiss Federal Law on Civil Protection requires all new dwellings to be fitted with shelters, and all inhabitants are required to have a quickly accessible, secure shelter.

    Old artillery bunker in Switzerland

Until 2006, Lucerne, Switzerland had the distinction of creating Switzerland’s largest bunker, the Sonnenberg tunnel. Created in 1976, the tunnel could accommodate 20,000 people. Though the tunnel is a motorway, seven floors above the tunnel were built in to provide services in the event of an attack or nuclear disaster.

The complex had glitches, however, not the least of which was the two weeks it would take to shut down the motorway below and convert it into a space for human habitation. The Sonnenberg was downsized in 2006, and the logistics center kept operational. It now has the capacity to house 2,000 people if needed.

Since 1951, Israel has required all residences, offices, and industrial buildings to have shelters. Today, the nation is well-equipped to ride out attacks from outside. Hospitals and schools are especially protected, some with reinforced concrete and bomb-proof windows. Residences have one-room shelters called “mamads, or “mammads.” Photographer Adam Reynolds has documented thousands of bomb shelters in Israel since 2014.

The October 7th, 2023, massacre testified to the importance of Israel’s shelters.

Though the safe rooms weren’t enough to protect every Israeli during the attacks, they undoubtably saved lives.

Until a few years ago, the concept of a safe room was still foreign.

In the Western world, even the idea of preparing for some catastrophe needing that level of protection would have drawn the “prepper” label and jokes. The COVID-19 pandemic, however, rattled our sense of personal security. It opened our eyes to the collective dangers around us and created a new wave of unapologetic preppers outfitting their own personal safe spaces.

In a September 4, 2022, article in The Guardian entitled, “The Super-rich ‘Preppers’ Planning to Save Themselves from the Apocalypse,” humanist Douglas Rushkoff discusses his interactions with billionaires preparing doomsday bunkers.

Meanwhile, a non-profit organization in Japan has built a model nuclear shelter and is actively encouraging the Japanese to build their own shelters against the rising threat of aggression from Russia and North Korea.

Not everyone, of course, will have such a resource available in the event of a national or world-wide catastrophe. Many will simply find whatever cave or man-made hole into which to hide.

Understanding what we do now in current events, Revelation 6 no longer seems implausible.

  • Tonight you turned on the tv.

Gloom, death, and agony are everywhere. The smell of sulfur pervades the airwaves as Satan dances in the blood of destroyed lives. Disgusted, you turn the set off.

Then you worry what you may be missing. What if something’s happening you need to know about?

You checked out social media just to see. For a couple of hours.

We are a church trapped in despair. As the veil between heaven and earth is rent, the spiritual battle becomes more and more intense. Life feels different, because it is different. We’re witnessing the death of an age. God’s people are disheartened by the daily assault against our homes, against the people we love, and against the foundations of our civilization. Society is being gutted. Casual Christianity doesn’t cut it anymore. Life as we know it has been decimated by raw evil, leaving us brutalized in the streets.

There are likely to be many more hard days, but there is a path to victory.

Have a talk with your soul.

    Spirit to Soul

God made us in His image. As such, we are tripartite, having three parts: body, soul, and spirit.

    • Body
    • Soul
    • Spirit

The physical body we know well. The soul is who we are, that eternal person trapped in a physical body and constantly at its beck and call. Our soul responds to internal and external stimuli. We’re cold. We’re happy. Our anxious thoughts multiply in response to the pressures of life. We feel fear when we’re threatened.

Our spirit, on the other hand, operates independently of those pressures. It died with Adam and is reborn in each person with our acceptance of the Savior. Man’s spirit communes with God and responds to the leading of the Holy Spirit Who indwells us at our salvation.

We are complex creatures constantly at war with ourselves. The Apostle Paul spoke of this struggle in his letter to the Romans.

    ROMANS 7:22-25

For I joyfully agree with the law of God in the inner person, but I see a different law in the parts of my body waging war against the law of my mind, and making me a prisoner of the law of sin, the law which is in my body’s parts. Wretched man that I am! Who will set me free from the body of this death? Thanks be to God through Jesus Christ our Lord! So then, on the one hand I myself with my mind am serving the law of God, but on the other, with my flesh the law of sin.

Sit down and rest a moment, Soul.

We are often caught in a vicious cycle. The external and internal pressures assault us. We are not equipped to handle these battles alone. If we can quiet our souls and wait upon the Lord, we will discover God is longing to speak in our spirits. If we listen in the hush of the night, He will speak. He will speak to us.

Take a walk through the Psalms.

The Psalmist talked to his soul.

    PSALM 62:5

My soul, wait in silence for God only,                                                                                                              For my hope is from Him.

    PSALM 42:5

Why are you in despair, O my soul?                                                                                                             And why have you become disturbed within me?                                                                                         Hope in God, for I shall again praise Him.                                                                                                     For the help of His presence.

    PSALM 103:1-5

Bless the LORD, O my soul,                                                                                                                          And all that is within me, bless His holy name.                                                                                            Bless the LORD, O my soul,                                                                                                                                And forget none of His benefits;                                                                                                                        Who pardons all your iniquities,                                                                                                                        Who heals all your illnesses;                                                                                                                        Who redeems your life from the pit,                                                                                                                Who crowns you with lovingkindness and compassion;                                                                          Who satisfies your years with good things,                                                                                                    So that your youth is renewed like the eagle.

    Choose to live in gratitude.

God loves you, and He hurts when you are overwhelmed with sorrow. He yearns to teach His beloved people how to withstand the gales of life. When we quiet our hearts before God, He will fill them with gratitude for His many kindnesses, not the least of which is eternal life. Thankfulness acknowledges and honors God for His abundant gifts. It redirects our minds from negative thoughts to praise.

    COLOSSIANS 2:6-7 (NKJV)

As you therefore have received Christ Jesus the Lord, so walk in Him, rooted and built up in Him and established in the faith, as you have been taught, abounding in it with thanksgiving.

ASAP Preach & Kurtis Hoppie – “IF I DIE” (Official Music Video)

  • FOR RELEASE NOVEMBER 17, 2023 — Lacey Sturm has released her sophomore solo album Kenotic Metanoia, available everywhere November 17 at https://stem.ffm.to/kenoticmetanoia

The former Flyleaf lead singer offers the project to the world independently, led by a string of arresting singles including “Awaken Love,” “Reconcile” and “Breathe With Me.”

The album’s enigmatic title is drawn from two Greek words: “kenosis,” referring to a state of emptying of self, and “metanoia,” referring to deep change and altering of course. Together, Lacey Sturm says that the title captures a moment when you start to see the truth about reality that you didn’t see before. “Kenotic metanoia” is the demand to address and respond to that truth, a call to leave one version of yourself behind.

“All these songs have been for my own heart,” Lacey has said. “When David sings the Psalms, a lot of the time he’s telling his soul what to do. That’s me too in this: telling my soul, singing what I know to be true.”

That truth ranges from the life-force found in “Breathe With Me” to the relinquishment of “Not Your Fight.” These songs are both intimately personal and appropriately mysterious, a glimpse into a deep spiritual process of surrender.

Contemplating the human experience, Lacey says, “Are we going to suffer? Do I need to fight against it, or do I stand and embrace whatever comes? Do I reject suffering and pain, or do I stand and walk through it so I can grow spiritually and see that there’s a strength I didn’t know was there?”

“My strength is made perfect in weakness,” the songstress continues, quoting the scripture. “You lay down your life and you become like Christ. He taught us what it’s like to be human: it’s to willingly lay your life down for love’s sake. It’s walking through that and learning compassion.”

The songs found on Kenotic Metanoia show the full range of both Lacey’s songwriting and vocals skills, fittingly for one of the most lauded voices in hard rock. Her distinctive scorching vocal tones combine with husband Josh Sturm’s broiling guitar riffs. The result is an album that promises to deliver on consistently heating fan hype.

The album also follows a successful summer of Flyleaf reunion dates, featuring Lacey at the band’s helm. With major appearances at festivals like Sick New World and Rockfest, Flyleaf proved that their fanbase is as moved as ever by their emotive hard rock.

John Cooper was the sheriff of a small town in the Wild West. He had a reputation for being tough and fearless, but he had a secret: he was afraid of horses. He always rode a donkey instead, which made him the target of many jokes.

One day, he heard that a notorious outlaw named Seth Morrison was coming to rob the bank. He gathered his deputies, Korey Cooper and Jen Ledger, and prepared to face him. But when they saw Seth riding a giant black stallion, John panicked and ran away, leaving his donkey behind.

Seth took the donkey as a souvenir and rode away laughing.
